INTRIGUANTES INCERTITUDES (INTRIGUING UNCERTAINTIES), Contemporary drawing
In the spring of 2016, the Musée d’Art Moderne et Contemporaine de Saint-Étienne Métropole is opening „Intriguing Uncertainties“, an exhibition which has been orchestrated by the Museum’s Director Lóránd Hegyi. Both intimate and universal this exhibition invites the visitor to explore the world of contemporary drawing.
Following in the footsteps of thematic collections over the last few years, „Intriguing Uncertainties“ explores the questions of doubt and uncertainty. The visitor is invited to stroll through the artists’ “inner kingdoms” littered with questions, ghosts and dreams, through most intimate and spontaneous path of artistic expression, drawing.
Bringing together well-known artists from Europe, Africa and North & South America this exhibition delves into the cultural heritage of our societies, from the Middle Ages to symbolism, from Mannerism to Romanticism, Baroque to Surrealism. The visitor will discover drawings and artwork by Günter Brus, Dennis Oppenheim, Jan Fabre and Jim Dine, great figures in the world of contemporary art rubbing shoulders with the youngest artists on the horizon like Pierre Seinturier, Lee Bul, Sandra Vasquez de la Horra and Jana Gunstheimer.
“Uncertainty” is an anxious feeling, reactive and provocative, it holds a central place in artistic creation and its poetic dimension. This passionate exhibition questions the place of mystery and what is strange, whilst opening the artists’ dialogue to modernity. It reflects on the path taken by Edmund Burke in the 18th Century in his search for the definition of the sublime, which underlined the power of ‘judicious obscurity’ and of ‘expressive uncertainty’.
Dennis Oppenheim, who is presented in the framework of this exhibition, willingly expressed ‘interior obscurity’ and ‘subterranean energy’, creative forces which drew their origins in the unspeakable, the harrowing and the uncertain. These forces which are at once obscure and unpredictable, transcend each artist on an emotional, psychological plain both consciously and unconsciously. Thus it is through drawing, a kind of intimate writing where anything is possible, that the artists reveal these ‘forces’ living within their inner kingdoms.
As disorientated as they may seem, the artists are showing works in this exhibition which echo both the human condition and the great questions of our world. Contemporary art weaves a web of intrigue and invites us to rethink our relationship with the world.
In a (post)modern world, which is intense and over-connected, when can we find the time to face our fears, to speak with our ‘internal ghosts’? Intriguing Uncertainties asks us to take the time to examine these demons in a new light, to find a mysterious beauty or unsuspected force hiding within…
